1.21 Safe to install
The Sound Meter for Android serves as a practical tool for measuring environmental noise using a mobile device. This application utilizes your phone's microphone to assess sound volume in decibels (dB) and provides a graphical representation of the measurements for enhanced user understanding.
It is important to note that mobile phone microphones are primarily tuned to capture human vocal frequencies between 300-3400 Hz (40-60 dB). Consequently, users should be aware that maximum values may be limited by the hardware specifications set by manufacturers, indicating that extremely loud sounds exceeding 110 dB may not yield accurate readings.
How to Use
Upon launching the app, the Sound Pressure Level (SPL) measurement is displayed automatically. The graph indicates both maximum and minimum values over an 8-second interval. Users can also monitor the overall maximum value recorded during the app's operation.
For calibration, access the settings menu by selecting the corresponding icon at the top of the interface, then follow the prompts accordingly. Once calibration is finalized, it can be saved for future use, negating the need for repeated calibration during subsequent sessions.
Sound Pressure
Sound pressure refers to the force (N) exerted by sound on a surface area (m²) that is perpendicular to the direction of the sound. The standard SI units for sound pressure are N/m² or Pa. Typically, sound levels are recorded using microphones that respond in proportion to sound pressure. It is essential to recognize that the power of a sound wave is proportional to the square of its pressure.
